Light Sussex Chickens

Picture
The Craig Farm raises Light Sussex chickens. Our flock began in early 2025 with the purchase of hatching eggs from Fertile Crescent Farm in Georgia. Of those chicks, we selected two trios that conformed best to the APA Standard of Perfection.

Our goal is to breed Sussex chickens that perform in the show ring and in the coop at home. After years of raising a competitive flock of Jersey Giant chickens, we wanted a true dual purpose bird that lays generously while also serving as a delicious table fowl that can be harvested sooner. So far, our Light Sussex have fit the bill wonderfully.

Sussex Chickens

The Sussex chicken is currently on the Livestock Conservancy's "Recovering" list. This indicates that there has been increased interest in preserving the breed, however numbers remain low enough that without continued dedication the breed could fall into peril of extinction. Sussex are currently recognized in three color varieties: light, red, and speckled. Speckled is the most common while light and red are much less so.

Sussex are to be a dual purpose breed. Productivity can vary by bloodline, but our birds tend to lay 5-6 light brown eggs per week. Pullets start off laying a medium to large egg, but older hens easily lay extra-large or jumbo eggs. I have found that our hens are good broodies and will remain with their nest. Extra cockerels grow quickly and by 7-8 months of age, are large enough to feed a small family. They forage well and are alert to the presence of potential predators. Sussex are a large, calm breed. They aren't skittish or aggressive.

Availability

As of March 2026: I am currently hatching for myself. Due to the small size of my flock, I am unable to offer chicks or hatching eggs at this time. I anticipate availability of juvenile pairs in the fall as I begin selecting which birds I wish to retain for my breeding program and which ones can move on. All birds are vaccinated for Marek's Disease, no exceptions.
