Standard-Bred Sussex Chickens
|
The Craig Farm has a small flock of Sussex chickens in north Georgia. Our goal is to breed Sussex according to the APA Standard of Perfection. We want to maintain a flock that is competitive in the show ring while also laying a generous number of eggs and providing a delicious, pasture-raised table fowl.
The Sussex are new to the farm for 2025. At this time we only have Light Sussex, but we would like to eventually add both Speckled and the non-standard variety Coronation. Our light Sussex birds are out of hatching eggs purchased from Fertile Crescent Farms in Georgia. All of our Sussex are vaccinated at hatch for Marek's Disease, no exception. We hope to hit the show table with our Sussex this fall! They are only 5 months old right now (September) but I am seeing some promising birds in this group already. ** I could possibly put together one or two pairs from this grouping once I make my final selections in November. Please contact me with your interest now - extra cockerels will go in the freezer once I pick my breeders. No pullet will go without a cockerel. ** |
Sussex Chickens
Sussex are a large dual purpose chicken breed, weighing 7-9 pounds. They are reliable layers of light brown eggs. The line we have was said to grow quickly and be table-ready within six months. They occasionally go broody. So far, we find them to have good growth on limited commercial feed with free choice forage. They are calm birds that do well in a mixed flock.
